Fixing Moisture Issues in Your Basement and Crawl Space
Basements and crawl spaces are naturally colder than the rest of the home and more prone to moisture. When they’re not insulated correctly, cold air and damp conditions move upward into the rest of the home.
A common example of poor insulation is when fiberglass insulation is installed between joists in the basement ceiling. While this may slightly improve comfort upstairs, it does nothing to make the basement itself warmer or drier, and it often fails when exposed to moisture.
Crawl spaces have similar issues. Traditional vented crawl spaces with fiberglass insulation frequently develop mold, sagging insulation, pest problems, and ongoing comfort issues.

Basement & Crawl Space Insulation and Air Sealing Options
There is no single insulation solution that works best for every basement or crawl space. Halco selects materials based on your home’s construction, moisture conditions, and long-term performance goals.
Solutions may include:
- Spray foam insulation in targeted areas like rim joists, where air sealing and insulation are needed together to close up gaps from plumbing, wiring, and vent penetrations. We either seal and insulate the rim joists only or insulate the rim joists and foundation walls.
- When applicable, we use rigid foam insulation on foundation or crawl space walls, which resists moisture and maintains R-value over time. Our Foamax rigid foam board leaves a semi-finished white surface and works additionally as a fire barrier.
- Moisture-resistant floor insulation systems (we use ThermalDry® Insulated Floor Decking) to reduce heat loss through concrete slabs and improve comfort
