Halco Home Solutions provides professional attic insulation services for homeowners across the Finger Lakes who want better home comfort, lower energy costs, and fewer moisture-related problems. Because heat rises, the attic is one of the most important areas of your home to insulate. It’s also one of the most commonly overlooked. If your home feels drafty in winter, overheats in summer, or struggles with ice dams or attic mold, poor attic insulation and air leaks are often the root of the problem.
With more than 40 years of experience helping local homeowners make their homes more comfortable, healthy, and energy efficient, Halco’s team of trained and certified insulation and air sealing experts is here to help improve your home!
Schedule an Energy Assessment TodayWhat New Attic Insulation Does for Your Home
A properly insulated attic helps your home perform the way it should by:
- Reducing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer
- Improving comfort throughout the living space below
- Lowering heating and cooling costs by 20%+!
- Reducing strain on HVAC equipment
- Helping control moisture movement
- Supporting healthier indoor air quality
Many homes already have attic insulation, but it’s often under-installed, settled, or missing in key areas. Because of the harsh winters we see here in the Finger Lakes, recommended attic insulation levels (R-49 to R-60) are significantly higher than what’s recommended for other parts of the country. In addition, many older homes, built before modern energy codes, never had much insulation to begin with!
Attic Insulation, Ice Dams & Moisture Problems
Attic insulation plays a major role in preventing ice dams and attic mold, two common problems in our region.
Ice dams form when heat escapes into the attic, warming the roof and melting snow. As that water refreezes at the colder roof edge, it creates dams that can force water under shingles and into your home. Proper attic air sealing and insulation help keep attic temperatures consistent, reducing the conditions that cause ice dams in the first place.
Attic mold is often caused by warm, moist air leaking up from the living space below. When that air hits the cold roof deck, moisture condenses, leading to mold growth and wood rot. Insulation alone won’t stop this. The solution is a combination of air sealing, insulation, and proper ventilation.
The Importance of Air Sealing Your Attic
Insulation slows heat transfer, but it does not stop air movement. That’s why Halco always prioritizes air sealing before adding attic insulation.
Common attic air leaks include:
- Recessed lights and electrical boxes
- Plumbing and wiring penetrations
- Attic access hatches and pull-down stairs
- Duct chases and exhaust fans
If these gaps aren’t sealed, warm air will continue escaping into the attic, no matter how much insulation is added on top. Air sealing helps prevent drafts and moisture problems, while allowing the insulation to do its job most effectively.
Types of Attic Insulation We Install
There is no single insulation that works best in every attic. Halco selects materials based on your home’s construction, existing conditions, moisture concerns, and performance goals.
Attic insulation options may include:
- Blown-in cellulose or fiberglass is often used to blanket attic floors evenly
- Spray foam insulation on the underside of the attic rafters, which insulates and air seals in one step
- Rigid foam board, used in specific applications
As one of the largest spray foam installers in the area, Halco has deep expertise with spray foam, but we don’t force it where it doesn’t belong. We use the right solution for the space, no exceptions.
We can remove old insulation if necessary, air seal, and then replace it, adding new insulation on top to bring it to the recommended R-value levels. In some cases, you don’t have to get rid of your existing attic insulation. In other cases, if your insulation is dirty or has gotten wet, we’ll need to replace it entirely with new insulation material.

A Whole-Home Approach to Attic Insulation
At Halco Home Solutions, attic insulation is never treated as an isolated or stand-alone upgrade. Improving the attic affects how air moves through your home, how your HVAC system operates, and how moisture is managed.
Because Halco provides insulation and air sealing, HVAC, ventilation, electrical, and plumbing services in-house, , we’re able to coordinate solutions that work together. If attic improvements reveal duct leakage, ventilation issues, or equipment sizing concerns, Halco can address those as part of a single, integrated plan.
That’s the advantage of a whole-home approach, and it’s why our motto is, “Yes, we do that!”
Improve Comfort Where It Starts
Not sure what your attic needs? A home energy assessment is often the best place to start.
During an assessment, Halco evaluates existing attic insulation levels, looks for areas of air leakage, and any moisture and ventilation issues.
