Insulation & Air Sealing Case Studies: Spray Foam Insulation in Alton, NY Saves Customer Energy and Improves Comfort
This Alton, NY customer called Halco to schedule a home energy audit to find out why their energy bills were so high and to discover why the 2nd floor of their house was cold and drafty in the winter time and unusually hot in the summer months. Our Energy Advisor performed a thorough inspection of the home and discovered that they had a major issue with air leakage, particularly in the attic.
We installed 6" of open-cell spray foam insulation along the roof slopes, as well as 12" of blown cellulose on the attic flats. We also air sealed the rim joists with 2" of open-cell spray foam to further tighten up the house. This customer should begin to see immediate improvements in the comfort of their home, as we dropped their blower door reading from 6200CFM50 all the way down to 3700CFM50. That translates to a 40% drop in air leakage throughout the house, which will drastically reduce the draftiness, the extreme seasonal temperatures, and lower energy bills!
These crawl space rim joists can be a common area for air leaks in a home, but with this spray foam insulation the homeowner can feel more comfortable.
This attic is officially insulated to comfort and energy efficiency!
