What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a natural mineral composed of soft, flexible fibers resistant to electricity, heat, and corrosion. Since it is an effective insulator, it was used in many building materials during the 20th century, including ceiling tiles, flooring, adhesives, insulation, fireproof fabrics and panels, and siding.

Asbestos-related diseases

While there is no ban on asbestos in the U.S., it is highly regulated. Since the 1980s, manufacturers have mostly phased out asbestos in favor of safer substitutes - this has caused asbestos exposure to drop dramatically.
