Home Energy Performance By Halco Helps Homeowners Save Up To 40% On Energy Bills

With energy costs going through the roof, homeowners want to be sure that they are not wasting energy dollars.

With energy costs going through the roof, homeowners want to be sure that they are not wasting energy dollars. Traditionally, determining energy efficiency required calls to a number of different contractors, each of whom wanted to sell their product or service. Now, homeowners can make a single call to Home Energy Performance by Halco for a comprehensive home assessment.

According to Halco President Hal Smith, Home Energy Performance is a total home approach to energy efficiency, conducted by five seasoned professionals who have received special training and certification from the Building Performance Institute (BPI). This new, fee-based service is division of Halco Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, which serves the Finger Lakes and Central New York from its headquarters in Phelps.

Smith explains, “We use sophisticated instruments and specialized software to analyze current energy consumption and determine where improvements can be made to maximize energy saving. The service is based on programs developed by BPI, the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the US EPA’s Energy Star® program.

“BPI taught our professionals to look at a house as a single, integrated system, since a chain is only as strong as the weakest link,” Smith continues. “Our software programs analyze each system in a home, process the data and provide an analysis of the whole house as well as each system. After improvements are made we come back and retest to be sure that everything is operating at peak efficiency and that the anticipated energy savings are being realized.”

A Home Energy Performance program begins with a no-charge initial consultation to determine if a comprehensive home analysis will save a homeowner energy dollars. If an analysis reveals improvements, the Home Energy Performance professional will discuss the many financing options. These options include government grants and low interest loans if a BPI certified contractor is used and Energy Star equipment is installed.

Each member of the Halco Home Energy Performance team took comprehesive training conducted by the Onondaga/Cortland/Madison BOCES. They then passed challenging examinations before being granted certification in their chosen specialties.

Paul Smith is certified as a building analyst. Don Leslie is certified as a building analyst and building shell specialist. David Smith and Dave Davenport are certified as building analysts, shell and heating specialists. Hal Smith is a building analyst, shell, heating and air conditioning specialist.

BPI certifies contractors in energy efficiency performance and NYSERDA, a utility-sponsored organization, promotes energy conservation, especially through the Energy Star program.
