Halco To Sponsor 5K Race/Walk To Benefit Lyons Community Center

Halco is known for helping people save energy in their homes throughout Upstate New York. Now the company wants you to expend energy on Saturday, July 13! That’s when the local plumbing, heating, air conditioning and renewable energy company will sponsor the Lyons Community Center/Halco 5K race and walk.

The race, being held in conjunction with the community’s annual Peppermint Days, will start at 9:00 AM with registration at 8:30. The starting line will be at the intersection of Church and Broad Street.

Runners can pre-register for $20 right up until the day before – Friday, July 12. The registration fee is $25 the day of the race. All proceeds will be used to fund operation of the Lyons Community Center.

The first 25 people to register will receive a high performance t-shirt. All others will receive a race shirt. First, second and third prizes will be awarded in the under 18 division and the over 18 division.

Fourteen building trades contractors participating in the New York State Energy Research and DevelopmentAuthority’s (NYSERDA) Home Performance with ENERGY STAR^®program have received awards from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for “outstanding contributions to energy efficiency” during 2012.

The 2012 Century Club Awards recognize Home Performance contractors that have completed 100 or more energy efficiency projects through the Home Performance program’s “whole house” approach during the year.

Home Energy Performance by Halco of Phelps completed 361 projects, significantly more than any other participating NYSERDA Home Performance contractor. It was followed by Powersmith of Copiague with 245 projects and Isaac Home Energy Performance of Rochester with 244.

New York’s Finger Lakes area is home to four of the 14 award winners, followed by Western New York with three, Long Island with two and Mohawk Valley, Central New York, Capital Region, Southern Tier and Westchester with one each.

“Congratulations to all the award winners for reaching this milestone,” said Francis J. Murray Jr., President and CEO, NYSERDA. “Under Governor Cuomo’s leadership, New York State remains a national leader in energy efficiency through the hard work and dedication of these nationally recognized participating Home Performance contractors.”

Through funding from Green Jobs-Green New York (GJGNY), established by New York State to encourage energy efficiency, home energy assessments through the Home Performance program are free for most New Yorkers. NYSERDA also provides help in paying for the energy improvements through cash-back incentives and low-cost financing, including On-Bill Recovery Financing, which enables homeowners, small business and nonprofits to pay for their energy improvement through projected savings on their utility bills.

More NYSERDA contractors received the DOE 2012 Century Club Awards than any program other than one – the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund with Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating.

Home Performance with ENERGY STAR uses a “whole-house” comprehensive assessment approach to reduce home energy usage. Homeowners work with a participating contractor trained in building science and accredited by the Building Performance Institute (BPI). The contractor measures the home’s overall energy performance, especially its insulation and air infiltration levels, and the efficiency of heating and cooling equipment, and assesses appliances and lighting. Contractors also test ovens, water heaters and other equipment to make sure dangerous combustion gases, such as carbon monoxide, are not leaking into the home. The homeowner receives a comprehensive home assessment report that includes recommendations for home improvements that will save energy. The contractor can then make the energy improvements for the homeowner.

Solar vs. Wind

The Cortland Standard covered the home show and spoke with Halco Energy during their visit. One of our representatives, Amanda Postma, told the newspaper that many individuals question the viability of solar power in New York, however, solar power is extremely energy efficient, and there is more than enough sun to provide a power resource. Solar energy also offers less in the way of an upfront investment and can be leased instead of owned. Solar power can work anywhere, whether rural or urban.

Wind power can sometimes deter homeowners from investing in energy-efficiency, because it costs more than solar. For the homeowner who has little space to work with, wind power might not be the solution, since it also requires more space to install a turbine.

Halco has received a 2012 Home Performance with ENERGY STAR^® Century Club Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. This is the third year in a row that Halco has been honored with this prestigious award.

According to NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research & Development Authority), which administers the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR^®, Halco completed 361 energy saving home performance projects. This was the highest number in the state.

After being honored as top home energy performance contractor in New York State, Halco has now been “spotlighted” as a top contractor in the United States. The recognition will take place at the annual ACI (Affordable Comfort Inc.) national conference in Baltimore.

Halco First Contractor In New York State To Participate In New Apprenticeship Program

We have all heard of apprentice plumbers, electricians, and heating/ air conditioning technicians. But, have you heard of an apprentice energy efficiency technician? Not many people have, but New York State does have an apprenticeship in this fast growing segment of the comfort industry, and Halco is the first contractor in New York State of to participate in the program.

Currently, three Halco employees, William Quackenbush of Rochester, Benjamin Secor of Geneva and Zachery Dube of Waterloo, are enrolled in the energy efficiency technician apprenticeship program. Each is working side-by-side with an experienced Halco technician who is certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI) as a building analyst professional. After the apprentices have completed 2,200 hours of training, they will advance to the next step in their career – journeyman – on the way to becoming a master craftsman.

The training consists of classroom study and on-the-job training, and apprentices are tested on their field work, and also take written exams. When they complete their apprenticeships, Quackenbush, Secor and Dube will also be eligible to take the BPI building analyst certification exam.

Halco participates in four other New York State apprenticeship programs – plumbing, electrical, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and sheet metal fabricating. President Hal Smith notes that apprentices are paid, and that apprenticeship programs are strictly regulated by the New York State Department of Labor. Smith says apprenticeship programs were established centuries ago to train new people in a craft or trade by having them work side-by-side with a master craftsman or journeyman.

When they complete their apprenticeships, Quackenrush, Secor and Dube will be qualified to work as home energy technicians. Using sophisticated instruments and software programs, they will audit energy usage in customers’ homes and determine where energy is being lost to leakage and system inefficiencies. They will also be trained to present results of the audit and supervise any improvement measures.

Halco is an industry leader in the home energy performance field. In 2011, Halco completed 399 home energy audits, and was honored as the top home energy performance contractor in the state. Halco was also recognized nationally.

Smith says, "There is no charge to most homeowners for home energy audits. They are paid for by NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) from funds you have already paid in your utility bill. It makes sense for everyone to take advantage of this service."

Phelps, NY - Halco is proud to announce its participation as an Explorer Post in Learning for Life’s Exploring program, which gives youth the opportunity to receive real-world career experiences.

As a first-time Explorer Post, Halco opens its doors to the community’s youth enabling them to visit the facilities and experience working life in the skilled trades. Students will come to Halco once a month during the school year for a total of eight visits.

Owner Hal Smith, a Chair of the Finger Lakes Work Force, has partnered with Explorers to make this happen.

“It is very exciting to bring this Exploring program to the four counties of the Finger Lakes. It gives youth hands-on experience with Halco and other reputable businesses,” said Smith.

Exploring is a career education program for youth who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years old. It aims to provide experiences that help young people develop into mature, responsible working adults. Employees benefit as well by showing leadership and problem-solving skills, improving community involvement, and being identified as good adult role models—just to name a few of the positive outcomes.

Participating in training and education is not new to Halco. The company has its own Training Center in conjunction with a local community college to offer classes in the trades to employees, students, and those out of work. Smith started Halco almost three decades ago and has led the company to remarkable growth. Halco is proud to have participated in the Finger Lakes Works’ 7th Annual “Finger Lakes Works… with their hands” career fair where students could learn a variety of skilled trades. The event was held in Senaca Falls on October 4 where nearly 600 high school students from 23 school districts were in attendance.

Hal Smith, owner of Halco, is a former committee chair and current chair for The Finger Lakes Work Force. As such, he was pleased to work with the area youth at this great event. Smith believes that helping students gain more hands-on experience is a great way for businesses to grow in the future.

“I am so proud to have been a part of the board that founded this event seven years ago. As a chair of the Finger Lakes Work Force, I am happy to play a role in such an influential event as this. If we can impact one student’s life, it has been well worth the investment,” said Smith.

Halco has been a part of this event since its beginning 7 years ago. This year, some of the activities provided by Halco included:

Phelps, New York - The owner of Halco, a local leader in the energy and heating and cooling industries, has recently presented a course at a two-day training event in Austin, TX for the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA).

The two days of this ACCA training were divided by 2-hour breakout sessions presented by various experts from across the nation. One such presenter, Hal Smith, owner of Halco, attracted the attention of many ACCA attendees to his breakout session entitled, “Retrofitting Net Zero Homes.”

The presentation delved into the importance of and how to properly retrofit Net Zero homes. More specifically, Smith explained that these homes that use as much energy as they produce, in many cases will require home performance, geothermal, insulation, and solar work. In order to know exactly what each home needs, a home energy audit must first be performed.

“It was a privilege to not only present a breakout session about retrofitting Net Zero homes at the recent ACCA training, but to also witness the very many excited air conditioning contractors. I hope that they all see the light, so to say, and get involved in home performance. It really is the right thing to do for the customer and worth the investment,” Smith said.

Halco was recently honored at the 2012 Basement Systems Annual Convention where close to 1,000 guests from dealers all over the United States, Canada and the UK, were in attendance.

The annual convention is held each year between Seymour, CT, (Basement Systems headquarters) and Hartford, CT, and brings together dealers from several networks of expertise including: radon, energy, basements, crawl spaces, and foundations. The convention offers dealers unmatched training, seminars, networking, award celebrations, vendor opportunities and team building events.

This year, Owner Hal Smith accepted Halco’s award for 3rd place in the Dr. Energy Saver Dealer network for the 2011-2012 year.

The Century Club Award is an important milestone in the home performance industry marking the hard work of participating contractors in the rapidly growing home energy industry.

Phelps, NY - The Renewable Energy Division of Halco has been featured in, “The Power of the Wind and the Sun,” an article in the summer issue of Life in the Fingerlakes magazine. The article tells of Halco helping a family use wind and solar power for their home’s electricity.

For this major project, Halco’s Renewable Energy Division performed all the design-work and installation of the two systems that when combined provide 50% of the customer’s electric usage for one year. They installed a wind electric turbine on a 100-foot tower in addition to a grid-connected solar electric system oriented to the south, on an adjustable pole, and mounted near the house.

The article goes on to explain the savings the customer is enjoying as well as the appealing incentives and tax credits available to homeowners making use of renewable energy. In fact, Melissa Kemp, Halco’s Renewable Energy Manager, notes that the Finger Lakes region of New York State has plentiful renewable energy resources coinciding with Hal Smith, president of Halco, saying that energy resources are a prime consideration among the area’s population.

Halco Announces New Energy Efficiency Specialist Training

Beginning February 22nd 2010, Halco will partner with Monroe Community College (MCC) to offer a innovative new Energy Efficiency Specialist training program that includes the BPI Building Analyst and Envelope Professional classes, BPI certification, and hands-on experience in every aspect of conducting energy audits, performing air sealing and insulation measures, and completing test out procedures to guarantee building performance. The class will run through July, Monday through Friday, 7:30am-4pm, and is designed for professionals looking to expand or change fields, students, and unemployed workers. The Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration NEWS magazine is a national publication subscribed to by contractors across the country. Hal and Tammy were honored in January when Halco was chosen as the 2009 best contractor to work for in the east. Both Hal and Tammy are very much involved with the day to day operations in the business and are involved with many national organizations in the industry.

Halco continues to blaze the trails in the HVAC industry by expanding their business into Home Energy Performance several years ago and recently into renewable energies as well. This spring, Halco's Renewable Energy Division completed and showcased two local residential projects that were particularly exciting. One was an Ithaca family that installed solar electric and geothermal systems, and now is approaching a net-zero house - or in other words, a house that produces all the energy it needs from sustainable sources. The other was a Phelps couple who installed both solar electric and wind electric systems and were excited to see a side by side comparison. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has honored Home Energy Performance By Halco as its top contractor in New York State.

From the 200 participating contractors in the state (and that includes New York City and Long Island), our company, headquartered in Phelps, was recognized for excellence in customer service and high-quality work through the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program, which helps homeowners reduce energy usage and cut energy costs.

Home Energy Performance by Halco received the award for "Outstanding Achievement and Excellence for top customer service,high quality solutions, and in-house professional employee training." NYSERDA also noted that Halco is one of the most productive contractors in the program, completing 399 jobs in 2010-2011." The award was presented to President Hal Smith at the recent Affordable Comfort Inc. (ACI) conference in Saratoga Springs.

Home Performance with ENERGY STAR uses a "whole house," comprehensive assessment approach to reduce home energy usage. Homeowners work with a participating contractor, like Halco, trained in building science and accredited by the Building Performance Institute (BPI). Our Home Energy Performance professionals measures the home's overall energy performance, especially its insulation and air infiltration levels, and the efficiency of heating and cooling equipment, appliances and lighting. We also test ovens, water heaters and other equipment to make sure dangerous combustion gases, such as carbon monoxide, are not leaking into the home. The homeowner receives a comprehensive home assessment report that includes recommendations for home improvements that will save energy. Halco can then make the energy improvements for the homeowner.
